My son plays in a youth sports league and the team was slide tackling to get the ball. I thought this was illegal in play?

not illegal if they play the ball. Only commits foul if takes player without ball.
The Grey area is that it is at the discretion of the ref as to the outcome.

   Slide tackling is legal unless your league stipulates that it is illegal. The slide tackle cannot be from behind and they must play the ball(not the player). It can be dangerous if done immproperly. But when performed correctly can be a terrific move.

   We take it out in senior mens games and it is generally not allowed in the indoor game as the new artificial surfaces do not "give" like grass
