What permission do I need to put an official sports team logo, colors, etc on a product I make?

March 52010

I am making a few products, but I wanted to know what permission do I need to put the official logo’s of sports teams, including colors, etc on something like this. An example would be if I made my own ball caps and I want to put an NBA, NFL team logo on it?

Let me know, thanks!

If you want to sell what you make, you will need to get a licence from the teams you want to use.

It depends on if you are planning on selling them or not. If you buy premade patches or screenprints you don’t need permission as they would already be lisenced. If you are doing all of it yourself then you would have to pay royalties and contact every team responsible for the logo. If you just put the team name you don’t have to ask permission.

The NBA / NFL etc teams (And most colleges) have licensing offices that do nothing but this. They will charge you a fee. How it’s worked out is negotiable – a flat fee for a limited number, so much per hat – whatever you work out with them.
